LAS VEGAS — South Dakota State University wrestler Tanner Sloan placed second in the 97-kilogram division of the UWW Junior Freestyle competition at the 2019 Marine Corps U.S. Open over the weekend.
 
Wrestling under the banner of the Jackrabbit Wrestling Club, Sloan compiled a 4-1 record in the two-day tournament and earned a spot in the Junior World Team Trials Challenge Tournament in Raleigh, North Carolina, May 17-19. He opened with back-to-back 10-0 victories over Cole Forrester (Air Force RTC) and Mateo Pena (unattached) before posting a 6-2 win over Antonio Andrade (Oklahoma) in the quarterfinals.
 
A native of Alburnett, Iowa, Sloan advanced to the championship with a 15-4 victory Saturday against Wyatt Hendrickson (unattached). In the title bout, Sloan dropped a 17-13 decision to Sam Schuyler of the Bulls Wrestling Club from Buffalo, New York.
 
Five other SDSU wrestlers who redshirted during the 2018-19 season competed in the junior freestyle tournament., but did not place Zach Price and Clay Carlson each recorded 4-2 marks in the 61- and 65-kilogram classes, respectively.Dalton Lakmann posted a 2-2 mark at 74 kilograms, while Kenny O’Neil added a 1-2 mark in the same weight class. Rylee Molitor dropped both of his matches at 65 kilograms.
